Cozy Cover for a Headboard at Heart and Home

Hello Everyone! I'm so glad you're here. I've been away for a few days, enjoying some time with my daughters, hanging out here at the house, and visiting a few of our favorite places. We had a great time together, and now it's time to get back to work!

I'm especially pleased to welcome you if you're here for the first time, visiting from Kelee's Katillac Shack. I'm proud and honored to be included as a "Shackster" over at Kelee's place. She's having a really great give-away you don't want to miss, and is also featuring Claudia from Mockingbird Hill Cottage. I know you'll love having a visit with both Kelee and Claudia, so head on over there after you're done here! I'm in great company as a member of the "Shack", and very eager to meet all of my new visitors! I hope you'll have a look around, and please remember to leave me a comment to let me know you were here. I'll be by to say hello as soon as I can!

Kelee's featuring one of my spring projects. I finished this just as the weather changed, and I'm very happy with the results!

I love the metal four poster bed frame that we have in our bedroom. But I wanted to do something to soften it up a bit for the warmer months. I decided to stitch up a slipcover (a headboard-cozy!) for the headboard. And the best part is I already had all the supplies, this project didn't cost me a dime!

First I made a pattern in the shape of the headboard, and cut a large piece of quilted fabric to fit.

After I ironed fusible webbing to it, I cut birds and branches and leaves out of some of my pretty scrap fabrics. I decided to stick with blue and white, and to keep the design free-flowing and simple.

Then I ironed the pieces to the large piece of quilted fabric, laying it out as I went along.

After the pieces were all ironed in place, I top-stitched them with a zigzag stitch creating an applique.

Next, I made some piping and attached it to the top inside edge of the fabric, and sewed on a back piece of fabric. I added ties to the sides and bottom of the slipcover to help keep it in place.
Here's the headboard before the transformation:

And here it is after, with the finished slipcover:

I also hung some sheer drapes from the frame of the bed, to create a soft, romantic atmosphere.

What do you think? I really enjoy the softness this brings to our room. The bright white sheers surrounding me when I snuggle in at night make it seem like I'm inside a billowy cloud!

Who knows what I'll try to slip-cover next!

If you've visited Heart and Home before, you know I like to mix and match things. The bedding in our room is no exception. In addition to the sheer curtain panels and the appliqued "headboard cozy", I used a lace-patterned bed-skirt, a pastel colored quilt, a matelasse' duvet cover, crocheted, cotton damask, and matelasse' pillow shams, and white egyptian cotton sheets to dress the bed. I change things around a lot, and because I only buy things I really love (or make them!), everything compliments everything else. It's fun to try new combinations. I stick with the same color pallete, and somehow it all works.

Thanks again to my sweet friend Kelee. I'm proud, honored and humbled to join the ranks of some very talented and inspiring Shacksters! Please go by and have a look at her place, enter her drawing, and say hello to fellow new Shackster Claudia at Mockingbird Hill Cottage , too!

Until next time,
XO
Heidi

If you want to read an inspiring and uplifting story, go see Kim at Dear Daisy Cottage. It was truly a priviledge for me to have been able to participate in a small way. My thoughts are with Jack.

I'd love it if you'd come join the party here on Wednesday for Wednesday Gratitude!

I love the sheers. We put pink ones on Jemma's bed and she says it is the best fairy castle bed ever. You have a definite talent!!! I love the mix of fabrics and everything. Such a gorgeous space.

Heidi,
I'm so glad you're home now! I really missed your posts. It also sounds like you had a beautiful time with your daughters! Your headboard is absolutely precious. Once again, I am inspired. I would love to make a quilt like that! Gosh, I could even do chair covers...hmmmnnn....my wheels are spinning! I have so many old dining room chairs that need a facelift! (I don't know why--but I seem to collect dining room chairs).
Anyway, your bedroom looks warm and happy and very sweet!

Heidi, what a fantastic job!! I thought they were saying this was your project this weekend when I first spotted it.

Much more delicate work than worrying over that big downed tree in your yard.

Just gorgeous!!

Lovely, lovely bed. You did an amazing job on the fit. It can't be that simple to make a pattern for a headboard. It's not like you can lay it on the floor and trace it.

I'm glad I found your blog. I must look back and see what other clever things you've done.
